About the Jungle
The Amazon region is wildly famous for its unique biodiversity, consisting of thousands of animal and bird species as well as untold numbers of insects, plants and other life forms. The cultural diversity among Amazonian indigenous people is also quite astounding. The beauty and resources of the Amazon are living testimony to the jungle's natural wealth and also of its fragility, where every living species is an essential part of an infinitely complex and interdependent ecosystem. Every single loss of life within the jungle threatens irreversible changes in the entire ecosystem.
We invite you to enjoy an incredibly unique experience by joining us in our distinctive tour programs which include the following highlights:
- Quality jungle lodges with bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens and bathrooms (several have running water) all built with traditional construction materials and techniques
- Unforgettable guided treks and nighttime walks in the tropical rainforest
- Participation in community minga work, preparing chicha (the Amazon drink made from yuca – cassava/yam) and other daily activities
- Special natural and cultural sites within the jungle such as ancient stone carvings, waterfalls, natural pools, caves, animal gathering places and observation points with wonderful views over the jungle
- Witnessing traditional natural cures using medicinal plants based on the indigenous ancient ethno-botanical knowledge
- Experiencing traditional music and dance, storytelling, legends, craft making, hunting arts, games and other cultural activities (Note: The hunting arts (blow-pipes, etc.) are not practiced on either animals or birds during any of the tour programs.)
- Visits to community project headquarters such as centres for the rescue of endangered wild animals, ethno-botanical nurseries where our communities cultivate medicinal plants and family-run farms to learn about traditional agriculture techniques used within the jungle.
Activities during your jungle trip
Hiking
Along our hikes, you will marvel at the gigantic trees of the Amazon towering overhead, at the lower plants twisting and straining for sunlight on the rain forest floor and at the unique flowers and fruits providing nourishment for the exotic animals and birds wandering around.
Swimming
There are plenty of opportunities throughout the tour to wade and swim in the Amazon basin’s stunning rivers and lakes.
Night excursions
Whether by paddle canoe or a short walk, your nighttime experience in the jungle is sure to feel completely different without the light of day.
Short strolls and longer walks
One of the best ways to explore the Amazon rain forest is through our daily walks. On one of your walks, you will be accompanied by a native guide who will introduce you to the secrets of the jungle's medicinal plants and their practical applications.
Canoe trips
The canoe trips along the Amazon's rivers are excellent opportunities for viewing parrots, macaws, herons and river turtles. The dense, green walls of the rainforest are broken occasionally by small indigenous settlements as you navigate downstream.
Paddle native canoes
There are also opportunities to paddle native canoes on your own or with a few companions in the smaller rivers and lakes.
Explore small rivers
Motor canoes provide a more relaxed way to travel along the smaller river's still waters and to observe the lush vegetation on its banks: such as the giant kapok and swaying palm trees. Keep an eye open for the spectacular pink dolphins darting around the river bends or for the colorful toucans, parrots and eagles flying overhead.
Birdwatching
Professional and novice birdwatchers should definitely take advantage of our early morning birdwatching outings as these are the best times to spot the jungle's fine-feathered inhabitants.
Naturalist lectures & discussions
Each evening the naturalist guides captivate tourists with their expert knowledge about Amazonian flora, fauna, native communities and so much more.
